NSW Government endorsed resources
- NSW Bicycle Guidelines | PDF 9.8MB - assists road designers, engineers and planners to design and construct high-quality bicycle transport facilities for the people of NSW;
- Australian Bicycle Council - the national body that manages and coordinates implementation of the Australian National Cycling Strategy 2011 - 2016;
- Planning Guidelines for Walking and Cycling - to help land use planners and related professionals improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists through their work.
- How to Prepare a Bike Plan | PDF 738KB - a step-by-step guide for councils to ensure that local cycle facilities in your area are effective and well-integrated;
- Bureau of Transport Statistics - the Transport for NSW portal to transport datasets for all parts of the State;
- Austroads Vehicle Classification System | PDF 126KB - find out the classes of light vehicles, heavy vehicles, long vehicles and road trains;
- Bike Rack as Art - A joint initiative between the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) and the Powerhouse Museum, entrants were invited to design a bike rack that combined cutting-edge street art with function bike parking.
NSW strategic plans
The NSW Government has embarked on an extensive program of actions to grow cycling. The NSW cycling action plan is in line with the Australian National Cycling Strategy 2011-2016. Action by the NSW Government includes building bicycle infrastructure to give people more safe places to ride, away from busy traffic - plus a host of supporting policies and initiatives involving many different government agencies, businesses and community organisations. NSW cycling actions are being reviewed as part of work on a new Long Term Transport Master Plan for the State.
- NSW 2021 - A plan to make NSW number one sets the Governments agenda for change in NSW, and sets the five-year target for more cycling in Greater Sydney;
- NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan - Now under preparation, a plan to address transport key challenges that face the State around population growth, job creation, and freight and public transport network needs;
- NSW cycling actions | PDF 6.04MB - outlines how the NSW Government will grow bike-riding to achieve targets;
- Metropolitan Plan - a single, integrated Metropolitan Transport Plan for Sydney to sustainably manage the city's growth to 2036;
- Sustainable Mountain Biking Strategy - This strategy will help guide the provision of high quality mountain biking experiences to ensure they will be provided only where they are appropriate and safe according to the most stringent environmental standards.

How to prepare a bike plan survey
Roads and Maritime Services' (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is currently updating the 2002 'How to prepare a bike plan' document that assists local councils in developing a comprehensive bike plan for their area. As part of this update we are asking for feedback from anyone who has read the current document or the draft document for the update.
