Road Safety Education Program

Improving bicycling skills

To ensure that children and adolescents are trained in safe road user behaviours, the NSW Government, through the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority), funds the NSW road safety education program. The program is a partnership between the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) and the following bodies:

  • Association of Independent Schools
  • Catholic Education Commission
  • NSW Department of Education and Training
  • Early Childhood Road Safety Education Program

Initiated in 1986, the program provides educational resources and professional development to teachers and childcare workers throughout NSW.

Why

The program is designed to:

  • Produce behavioural change through programs and campaigns.
  • Act as an advocate for children in road safety.
  • Provide appropriate resources for teachers and students.
  • Lobby for best practice.

When

The program is available for the following developmental stages:

  • Early childhood
  • Primary school
  • Secondary school
  • Tertiary

What

This is a long term, educational strategy with the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) acting as the lead agency and funding body:

  • It aims to develop and produce resources and professional development opportunities for teachers.
  • It advocates delivery of road safety education to students by classroom teachers.
  • The program is part of formal school curriculum and is a part of pre service training for teachers.
