Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bike route for me?

Cyclists can use dedicated cycle lanes in SydneyCyclists come in all shapes and sizes, from young children learning to ride to commuter cyclists who ride every day. The maps currently available from our maps page outline a variety of routes available but do not always specify the level of skill required to use them.

When deciding on a bike route we encourage you to consider your fitness level, the types of roads or paths the route may use and your skill level on your bike, before setting out.

The NSW Government is working on a project to start replacing the current static regional maps with an interactive bike trip-planning function through the Transport Info 131500 website. This will feature the facility for users to search and download customised maps, from an online database that will be continuously updated with the latest information on new cycleways.

Can you add my map to your website?

Our site currently has a large number of cycleways maps produced by NSW Government agencies, local councils and other organisations. We are always looking to add new maps to the site, so please send us a link to your map, via our 'Contact us' page, with a short blurb about the organisation that has put it together.

Our publication criteria includes:

  • The map is sourced from, or endorsed by, Local Councils or Government agencies and clearly identified as such on the map;
  • The map is sourced from a recognised educational institution, such as a university, which is clearly identified on the map;
  • The locality of the map is easily identified;

We will review your map and contact you within 14 working days.

Can you add my event to your website?

The events section is very popular and we want to increase the number of events promoted for riders of every skill and experience level. If you have an event you would like to have considered please send us a note via our 'Contact us' page with the following information:

  • The date, or dates, of the event.
  • The location of the event.
  • A short summary of the type of event, who can participate and if there is an entry fee.
  • A link to your events home page.
  • A contact number should we need more details.

We will review your request and contact you within 14 working days.

What happens once I report a hazard?

The 'Report a cycle safety hazard' section was created to make it easier for cyclists to tell us when they see a safety issue or hazard that may present a particular danger to other cyclists. When reporting a hazard please provide as much detail as possible to ensure the hazard can be located.

Once a hazard has been reported its location is used to determine which 'road authority' is responsible. If the road or path where you see a hazard is the responsibility of a NSW Government agency, including the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority), your report will be forwarded to them, with a request that the agency responds to you as soon as possible.

If the location of the hazard is the responsibility of a local council, we will advise you to contact the relevant council.

If you would like to determine which 'road authority' is responsible for a road or path before sending us a hazard report, you can call the local council responsible for the location of the hazard, or call the Transport Management Centre on 131 700 and follow the prompts.

Hazards can be reported here.

Can you add a link to my website?

Links are provided to a number of cycling support and information websites on the 'Tools and Resources' page and other content pages. The majority of the pages linked to contain information from other government departments and Local Councils.

If your page is focused on educating the public and sharing information or is concerned with promoting cycling or road safety please send us a link so we can link to your site.

As this is a NSW Government website we cannot link to websites that sell products or services for profit.

If your websites meets this criteria please send us a link via our Contact us page.

How can I join a BUG or club?

Bicycle user groups (BUGs) and cycling clubs are a great way to get to get healthy and meet new people.

On the 'Groups and clubs' page there are links to Cycling NSW or Bicycle NSW who will be able to help you find the right BUG or Club for you.

How can I get information added to your website?

We are always looking for new stories and information to add to Bicycleinfo. If you have information on anything from a great new cycling innovation or an academic paper on cycling we want to hear from you.

Please send us a short submission, via our 'Contact us' page, outlining the information and a link to it (where possible), we are happy to review it and will contact you within 14 workings days.
